To Speak with the Tongue of Angels

I was awoken in the middle of the night with a strong impression to write this post. As I mentioned in previous posts, I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I have been a member of this church my whole life. And my parents before me were also raised as members of this church. It has blessed my life in many ways.

We believe that the full gospel of Jesus Christ is now restored to the earth. That same priesthood authority has been returned to the earth. And with it, the power to perform ordinances such as baptism.

Yesterday I got to attend the baptism of a boy in my church. He turned eight years old and decided to follow Jesus Christ’s example and be baptized. I love going to baptisms. The music is beautiful. The talks are wonderful. I am reminded of my baptism day. My dress was itchy, but my grandma gave a talk. She sat down in front of me to give this talk. It was as if no one else was in the room. This felt important to me.

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we do not baptize babies. In fact, you have to be at least eight years old to be able to be baptized. This is so that you can understand the importance of this ordinance. By the age of eight, an individual can understand the difference between right and wrong. This helps them to understand that they are making covenants with God when they are baptized.

A covenant is sacred promise between you and Heavenly Father. In the baptismal covenant we promise to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ, bear one another’s burdens, mourn with those that mourn, comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and stand as a witness of God at all times, and in all things, and in all places.

In return, we are promised that we will be redeemed of God and numbered among the first resurrection, even eternal life. (Mosiah 18:8-10)

Last night, as a family we read in the scriptures. We study the Bible, and we also study The Book of Mormon. It is another testament of Jesus Christ. I love reading the Book of Mormon. Last night we read in 2 Nephi chapter 31. In verse 14 it says:

“After ye have repented of your sins, and witnessed unto the Father that ye are willing to keep my commandments, by the baptism of water, and have received the baptism of fire by the Holy Ghost, and can speak with a new tongue, yea, even the tongue of angels.”

This verse really stood out to me last night. The family kept reading but I stayed in this verse taking notes. Speak with a new tongue. After getting baptized and receiving the Holy Ghost we can speak with the tongue of angels? Wow!

Nephi goes on in Chapter 32:2-3.

Verse 2: “And now, how could ye speak with the tongue of angels save it were by the Holy Ghost?

Verse 3: “Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you, Feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.”

This! This is why I am up at 3 AM writing this post. The spirit wishes me to share this with you today. I want to listen when the Holy Ghost whispers to me. I want to understand what it says. It is an incredible feeling to know that God wants you to do something, and you choose to follow that prompting.

I was baptized at 8 years old. It has taken me several decades to learn how the tongue of angels works for me. How warnings feel. How revelation feels. How inspiration feels. It is all amazing! So specific to me.

In 2 Nephi 31:3 it says: “For my soul delighteth in plainness; for after this manner doth the Lord God work among the children of men. For the Lord God giveth light unto the understanding; for he speaketh unto men according to their language, unto their understanding.”

God knows exactly how plain I need things to understand them. He has sent me mail when I needed it, emails just at the right time for me to listen and to act. He has even sent me people from across the world to give me answers that I needed to hear from Him. (Those are posts to be written at another time)

It wasn’t until I reached adulthood that I started to understand this new tongue. I’m still learning today. But it is there. It is real. It is powerful. I am excited to see how my tongue of angels develops now that I have this knowledge. What an amazing gift to have!
