Brave Like A Bird

We have a robin’s nest under our deck. This robin made a nest to start her family. She took the dead leaves from our lily plants and started placing them together in such a methodical manner. Once her nest was complete, she laid her eggs. We have been able to watch this whole process.

It wasn’t long before the eggs hatched, and the babies were born. The grew quickly as this momma bird feed them. It seemed as though she never rested while she collected food and took care of their every need. These babies have grown very fast. We didn’t realize how fast until yesterday.

One of the kids went under the deck and yelped in surprise as a baby bird attempted to fly out of the nest. In the next second, we had two robins in the yard with food in their mouths chirping frantically. The kids were also all talking at once excitedly and I could not understand what was happening.

Finally, they quieted down enough to explain to me that the baby bird had tried to fly out of the nest and luckily landed on a plant instead of the hard concrete below. I went to go help the bird, but as soon as it saw me come near, it attempted to fly away again.

The two robins stayed near enough to encourage the little one to make it safely to them. We watched as it clumsily made its way over to them on our fence. It got stuck in several places along the way, but the baby was determined to make it to its parents and away from danger.

We decided to go upstairs on the deck to show them that we were giving them space to return safely to the nest. It was a while later that we heard all of the other baby birds chirping excitedly from the nest.

I like to think that they were excited to receive their sibling back into the safety of the nest. More than likely, they were excited to receive the food that the parents were bringing to them.

I was thinking about the bravery and determination of this little bird today and it reminded me of another brave and determined bird.

By our home, we have some hawks and big ravens. We also have a wide variety of little types of birds. Frequently, we will be outside, and we will see a little bird chasing a larger bird. Usually, it will be a raven that is being chased away from the little bird’s nest.

This happens often near our home. Yesterday, I was on a walk with a friend, and we saw this same phenomenon. This time, there were several little birds attacking a hawk. Once the hawk seemed to fly away, only one bird continued to attack and follow it from their nest.

My friend and I watched as the little bird seemed to chase it away. Then, the hawk turned back in the direction in it had just been chased from. That was all it took for the little bird to increase its efforts and attack more aggressively. It was soon after that we heard the hawk screech in alarm. This little bird chased this hawk for a long time and for a long distance to make sure that it would not dare come back.

It was fascinating to watch this much smaller bird catch up to the bigger hawk in frequent bursts to either peck or claw the bigger bird to keep it from wanting to return.

I am always amazed at the bravery of this smaller bird. This larger hawk is a predator. Its beak and talons are made for tearing up flesh. This smaller bird is absolutely not a predator. It is just surviving and keeping its tribe safe.

It reminds me of David and Goliath. This small frail bird with no chance of defeating a giant killer. I watch it happen frequently when I am outside. It is very possible. With faith and trust in God, we can defend our loved ones and chase away those that mean harm from them.

We have everything that we need to do that. But are we using those things? Prayer, scripture study, discernment of right and wrong, of truth and lies, of light and darkness.

This little bird has everything that it needs to defend its loved ones. It has great faith. What are you lacking? What can you increase so that you can do the same? I promise you that God has given you everything that you need.
