If the flies come into the house, that is a whole other story. We have to get the fly swatters out and then it seems to become a game of whack-a-mole. Recently, all of the lights were turned off to lure the fly into another area of the house so that she could relax and feel peace again.
Last night, a fly was in the bathroom. It was the tiniest little fruit fly. She kept trying to point it out to me, but I couldn’t see it because it was so tiny. She was so fixated on this fly that I knew it had to be there, so I kept looking. Eventually, I was able to see it and got it for her. I showed her that it was dead and could not bother her anymore and then washed it down the sink. It was only after that she was able to rest and relax.
This made me think about when I was younger, and I was around amazing people that had great testimonies of God and Jesus Christ. They could see all of the miracles in their lives. They were able to focus on a righteous path back to our Heavenly Parents and they did not waiver in their constant progression.
I couldn’t see what they were seeing. It was similar to me looking for the fly that my daughter was trying so hard to show me. I knew it was there, I trusted her enough to never doubt that it existed. But I couldn’t see it. I took me a long time and I had to concentrate so completely before I was able to see it. Once I did see and get it, we were both flooded with emotion. My emotion was triumph. Her emotion was relief.
I know that when I was not very active in church, my parents continued to go without me. They had their eyes glued to the path. They never even saw it coming when I decided to come back to church and really embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ with my whole soul. There were some big emotions on both sides there as well. My emotion was excitement, joy, awe and peace. Their emotion was relief and joy.
Before this time, I was definitely not in the best mind set to see the importance of living the gospel. But then one Sunday in church, I felt it. There was no mistaking it. The Spirit spoke to me so strongly. I was able to recognize it. There is no other feeling on this earth like it. It was time to make some big changes in my life.
It was easy because I was tired of living life the way that I was previously. It was also challenging because there were a lot of bad habits to break new healthier habits to begin and grow. I promise you that it is possible. Even addictive behavior. Put your trust in Him. He will help you to change. It is absolutely possible. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
Not long after catching the fruit fly in the bathroom, my little one called out for me even more urgently. Another fly had gotten into the bathroom with her, and this time it was a big house fly. It had landed on her arm, and she was frantic. When I came into the room, her eyes were welling with tears, and she was terrified.
I saw it and immediately chased it from the room. Once it was gone, she was unable to relax. It took me hours to help her calm down. She couldn’t relax enough to even go to sleep for fear that the fly would land on her.
I laid with her, and we both were sweating as she tried to cover us both with enough blankets to protect us from the fly. She did not want me to leave her. Finally, hours later, she fell into an exhausted sleep, and I was able to sneak away to my own bed.
I was thinking about this. Sometimes our fears are irrational. Sometimes, Satan tells us that we won’t be able to handle the hard things of life. He wants us to become a puddle and not be able to function.
When I realize this is happening, I like to show him how brave and strong I am. I push through the discomfort, and I continue on to accomplish whatever it is that has me terrified. This includes speaking in front of a crowd, flying in an airplane, saying I’m sorry and many more things.
Satan hates every time that I pull through. But he doesn’t give up. That is okay. I’m ready for him. I think I know the emotions that he experiences each time I push through and conquer my fears. Frustration, annoyance and disgust.
What is keeping you from doing hard things? Is it fear? Is it lack of motivation? Is it lack of confidence? Is it lack of support?
I know that there are already angels around you. If you pray and ask for help and guidance, you will get it. Look for it. Have great faith. Don’t stop praying. Remember also that you might have an expectation of how your prayer will be answered, but God knows exactly how it will be answered best and that might look nothing like what you expected.
Also, realize that God might have already answered your prayer. You might not have liked the answer. I’ve done that. I have ignored a very clear answer. I was just wasting time. We only have so much time to waste in this life. How much more time will you choose to waste?
