Start At the Beginning

I have a friend. She is very important to me. She told me that when she comes across something that doesn’t make any sense in the Gospel, she goes back to the beginning and then follows the truth back to the present. That is such simple and beautiful way to work through our doubts, confusion, and frustrations. I wish I had that advice earlier in my life. I’m sure I wouldn’t have seen the beauty in it though. We get the messages we need where we are at when we need them.

Last night I was able to attend a seminary graduation with my son. My son is not a seminary graduate, but we wanted to go and support his friends that are graduates and my son’s wonderful teacher. I’m so glad that we went. I was able to hear some great talks and testimonies. One stood out to me. One of the senior graduates gave an amazing talk. I want to share it with you.

This young man loves science. He shared how science and religion are actually quite similar. The base of science is asking questions and looking for evidence to find answers. The base of religion is also asking questions and looking for evidence to find answers. The most important questions are How and Why. I love that he shared this amazing insight with us. This young man will go and do amazing things. I’m excited for him.

After the program was over, the Stake President got up and commented on his remarks. He completely agreed with what he had said. The President also wanted to expand a little more. He talked about how we live in a day in age where there has never been more information at our fingertips before. It is free information. We can have knowledge in seconds. It becomes tricky though because there is a lot of information, but how much of it is truth? We must sift through things that are not true to find the truth. “But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right. But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong” (Doctrine and Covenants 9:8-9)

The graduating seminary students were given a gift. A coin that reminded them of three very important things:

  1. I am a child of God
  2. I am a child of the covenant
  3. I am a disciple of Christ

These amazing gifts were meant to remind these amazing young people throughout their lives of their celestial heritage. Of the power they receive from making covenants with God. And most importantly, who they need to make the focus of their earthly ministering in this life. Follow the example of Jesus Christ. Learn of Him. Teach others of Him.

I do believe in the Big Bang Theory. BUT. I know why and how it happened. You can too. Read about it in the Bible. The very beginning of the Bible starts with the explanation of how the earth was formed. We have more detailed knowledge in the Pearl of Great Price. Moses chapter 2 specifically. No matter where you find the truth, you must “Study it out in your mind and then ask ME if it be right”.

Ask your questions. Look for answers. Study it out in your mind. Ponder over it. Then Ask God.
