Praying About Earrings

Several years ago, I served in my church as a Young Women leader. There is a Young Women President, and she has two counselors. I was one of her counselors. I love working with the youth of the church.

One Sunday, after being newly called to work again in the young women presidency, one of the advisors was teaching the lesson to the girls. She was teaching about the power of prayer. She said something very interesting. She was filled with joy as she said, “You can even pray to know which earrings to wear.”

That was peculiar to me. I would think that God has more important things to worry about than to answer that seemingly trivial question. I’ve pondered on this frequently over the years.

As I have started this blog, I have had amazing experiences with the spirit. Some inspiration comes in the middle of the night. Some comes in the car. Some comes during my work outs. Some comes as I am going about my day. Some comes when I least expect it. I take lots of notes throughout my day so that I don’t forget.

It is the most amazing thing. It has changed my life. Because of this, my whole family life has changed. I am inspired. I pray to confirm it. I act on that inspiration. There are some things that I have been inspired to do that I am hesitant to act on. Because of fear.

I got this hat recently. It says Faith over Fear. I wear it often to remind me that fear will keep me from acting on Gods inspiration. It will keep me from blessing others. I don’t want that. I want Him to be able to trust me to do His will.

Why would God care about what earrings you wear? Maybe He will use them to be a beacon to someone. Maybe, that particular pair of earrings you pray about, will start a conversation with someone who needs you in their life. Or you need them. How will you ever know if you don’t pray?

I’m not writing this post to make you pray about earrings. I am trying to bring awareness that God is in all of the seemingly small details of our lives.

You pray to hit the green light because you are almost out of gas. You might hit the red light. But. Pay. Attention. Does it seem like that red light was a little shorter than normal? That has happened to me. Several times.

I tell my children to help me pray in situations like this. I am teaching them to reach out to their Father in Heaven when things are scary, or unsure, or unsettling. I am teaching them to make it the first thing that they do. It becomes habit to them. They are learning right now, in their young years of life to look to Heavenly Father.

He has not ever let them down. Every time we have prayed together, they find the missing car keys, or the light turns green just in time, or they find peace when things seem scary.

I have a daughter that loves to talk with Jesus. She talks with Him when she is upset. She talks with Him when she is scared. She is such an example to me.

My son was having really intense nosebleeds. The blood just pours from his nose. One day during homeschool, he started bleeding. It lasted for about twenty minutes when I finally called the pediatrician. They told me to take him to the emergency room if it didn’t stop soon.

Thankfully it stopped before we needed to go. I came back to resume school with the kids and my daughter was missing. The other kids said that she was upset and ran to her room. You know where she was? She was in her closet praying for her brother.

Another time, she was upset and sitting on the stairs. It seemed as if she was being defiant. Her therapist reminded her that she needed to continue to ascend the stairs and do the task that she was asked to do. She responded, “I’m talking to Jesus”. The therapist reminded her that “Jesus will walk with you and talk with you”. What an example to me of praying all day.

Last week, I was thinking about prayer. I realized that I had been doing it all wrong. I was more worried about the “sacredness” of it. Of getting on my knees and being really respectful every time. I didn’t really have the ability in our very busy days to do that. I would just put it off and then forget about it completely. It wouldn’t always pray when I needed to because I was so worried about doing it right.

Yes, there were times when I just prayed in the car or when I felt like I just needed to pray without being on my knees. I would do that. I would get the peace or inspiration that I needed. But this thought of a perfect reverence kept me from praying more than I was.

It was keeping me from having a stronger relationship with Heavenly Father. I decided last week to start praying wherever I was. You know what? It has been amazing! How my desire to be “perfect” had kept me from such a special relationship with Him.

In General Conference this weekend, Susan H Porter counseled: “Pray to know. Pray to Grow. Pray to show.”

This is so powerful! I have done this so much recently. I am a different person because of this new relationship with Him. I have repeatedly asked to know. I am growing. And He has shown me so much in just a short period of time.

Susan H Porter also says, “When you know that Heavenly Father is real and that He loves YOU, you can live with courage and hope!” (emphasis added)

I hope that this post today inspires you to seek for Him in your life.

A few decades ago, I had decided to change my life. A complete 180° change. I was praying in my closet so as not to be distracted or disturbed. I wanted to feel closer to Heavenly Father. I closed my eyes and pictured what I thought He might look like. When His image finally felt right, I began to pray.

This was a most special experience for me. I remember I was surrounded by love. It came from Him. I remember sobbing at the beauty of it. The tender love that I felt. The understanding that I had been forgiven for all of my transgressions. It was beautiful. It was powerful.

Go find your quiet place and turn to Him. Spend time there. Be vulnerable. Have faith. He is there. Waiting for you.

Have Faith over Fear!
