The last few days have been filled with bickering in our home. We have tried many different techniques to keep the bickering from lingering. It causes contention and hard feelings among the children. It makes it hard to feel the light in our home.
Over the last two days, I kept thinking about this woman I once knew. She would share that when things got hard with her parenting, she would take her rosary beads and go sit in her car in the garage. It was her place of quiet. And she would pray.
This story she shared with me kept coming to my thoughts. I decided the spirit was trying to tell me something. I joked with a friend about how I would just drop to my knees wherever I was at in the house to pray when things go intense. We giggled together thinking of how the kids would respond to this.
Within the next hour, I had the strong impression that it is exactly what our home needs. It would show the kids an example of turning to God when things are difficult. For when things get difficult, sometimes it is difficult to pray. When things are difficult, praying is not always the first thing on my mind. I need to work on that. With this example, I can show my children that first they can turn to God, then He can fill them with the power to endure their hardship well.
I shared with the kids the new plan. I felt prompted to ask them if they would like to participate as well, or if they would rather me just pray alone. I was surprised when the majority of them said that they wanted to participate also.
The first time we stopped to pray, we were coming upstairs from the basement. Bickering had started. I can’t remember why. We stopped right there in the stairwell and prayed. You know what? It brought peace and humility to everyone immediately.
We stopped what we were doing and prayed at least three or four times yesterday. It didn’t matter who was in our home at the time. They all respected what we were doing. By the end of the evening, we had a loving and spirit filled discussion together as a family. We discussed Grace.
We asked the children to share their favorite story from the scriptures that show grace. I was amazed at their understanding of the scriptures but also their ability to understand grace. It was an awesome conversation. I know I went to bed with my spiritual cup filled.
What a wonderful solution to the bickering problem of the house. I’m excited to see how this changes things for our family. I’m also excited to develop my habit of praying when things get difficult. God is always there, but how much more He can bless us if we invite Him into our lives.
